Chapter Twenty

Something was definitely wrong.

Alexa woke from a fitful sleep, her body aching and tired. Lying quietly, she listened for movement in the house. It was so silent, the place could’ve been deserted.

Last night, Zeke had laid her on the bed fully dressed. She was going to get up to pull a T-shirt from Zeke’s drawer, but she fell asleep before she finished that thought. A shower would’ve felt so good. Hell, how about a Jacuzzi? He might have one somewhere in the huge expanse.

Still wondering what woke her, she went to the door and poked her head out. Zeke’s scent was strong like he was there recently. She followed the trail of her mate’s footsteps into the living room, more specifically, the large windows.

The sight was beautiful with a tailored flower bed and white rock outlining shrubbery. He had great taste in decorating. It was exactly what she would’ve done.

Leaving her mate’s path, she opened the front door to see if anybody else was here. She walked onto the front lawn just to look around. Down the road, a truck was parked on the side. It was far away, but her eyes had no problem seeing it. With nothing but silence, she went back inside.

A cup of coffee sounded awesome. Maybe a couple cups, or a full pot, would be even better. She smelled Zeke’s way to the kitchen. So where was he? She trailed through the kitchen to the side door, then opened it and looked around. Why would’ve he gone outside? And she still didn’t see him.

At the edge of the trees, she saw something piled up that didn’t look natural. After looking around again, she darted for the woods. She picked up his robe. Why would—he shifted. Oh my god. She had to find him.

She called out his name twice, but he never replied. What if he was hurt? Lying on the ground bleeding out because he didn’t know to shift to heal himself.

They hadn’t talked about how to shift, what to expect, or how to change back. Granted, he was an adult and not a kid just learning, but still...it hadn’t even been twenty-four hours yet.

Then she heard the loudest roar she’d ever experienced. The ground vibrated and a few leaves fell from trees. Robe draped over her arm, she borrowed speed from her shifter to get him.

She heard someone running toward her. Sliding behind a tree, she waited to see a human in camo sprinting toward the road. Pure fear came from him.

Keeping her current path, she bypassed the smell and hurried forward. Through the trees, she saw hints of gold. Was that his other half?

She approached slowly, watching him. He sat quietly, chest out, head up. He was majestic. Beautiful. Simba had nothing on her lion man. Her lioness scratched to get out. She wanted to rub all over the male. Alexa wanted that, too, but not with this particular form.

Not yet.

Mine! Mine! Mine!

She sighed. Alexa had enough of fighting her animal yesterday.

Alexa approached her mate, tossed the robe over her shoulder, and took his stunning face into her hands.
